What is the ACL?
ACL is an Anterior Cruciate Ligament. ACL is the most common type of ligament that crosses from underside of the knee or femur to the top of the tibia. ACL is a strong ligament which runs diagonally through the middle of the knees and helps the knees to be stable especially while taking a turn or while moving the knee joint from side to side. It is one of the most commonly injured ligaments. ACL is usually torn by suddenly slowing down, while turning or while sidestepping. Anterior Cruciate Ligament is also more likely to be injured while playing rigorous sports.
If the patient does not have the ACL repaired the affected knee may continue to be unstable which increases the chances of a meniscus tear. ACL Repair Surgery is recommended to patients who are suffering from the following problems in the knees:-
- Severe pain in the knees.
- Instability in the knees while performing daily activities.
- Inability to play sports or other activities.
- Injured ligaments.
- Torn meniscus.
Before The Surgery: - 2 weeks prior surgery patients are advised to stop taking blood-thinning drugs, consuming alcohol and smoking. Patients are told not to drink or eat anything for 6 to 12 hours before the surgery.
Surgical Procedure: - ACL Repair Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The damaged tissues that are to be replaced are taken from the patient’s body itself or from a donor. Tissue taken from the patient’s body is called an autograft and tissue taken from a donor is called as an allograft. ACL Repair Surgery is generally performed with the help of knee arthroscopy. With arthroscopy approach, a small camera is inserted into the knee through a small surgical cut which is attached to the monitor. The surgeon uses the camera to check the ligaments and other tissues of the knees.
Orthopedic surgeon makes a small incision around the knee and inserts other medical instruments and fix’s the damage in the knees. The torn ligaments are removed with the help of the instruments. In case if the patient's tissues are used to make the new ACL the orthopedic surgeon will make a large incision and remove the autograft from the incision. An orthopedic surgeon will make tunnels in the bones to bring the new tissue through. This new tissue will be placed in the same place as the old ACL and attach the new ligament to the bone with screws or other devices to hold it in place. As the ligament heals the bone tunnels fill in and holds the new ligament in place. Next, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures.
Post-Surgery:- Most people can go home the day of the surgery. Patient are recommended to wear a knee brace for at least 1 to 4 weeks and are advised to use crutches for 1 to 4 weeks. Physical therapy can help patient in regaining the motion and strength in their knee which can last up 4 to 6 months.
- A blood clot in the leg.
- Failure in the healing of ligament.
- Pain in the knee.
- Failure of the surgery.
- Injury to the nearby blood vessels.
- Stiffness in the knee.
- Lost range of motion.
- Weakness in the knee.
